It’s not often we get a day all together as a family lately.
My wife works Monday to Friday and I have been working one or two days on weekends. Anyway today we were all together. It’s nearly the end of the school holidays and we wanted to do something fun as a family that didn’t involve spending money. The beach was a pretty easy choice on a magic sunny autumn day.
We loaded up the kids and beach gear, stopped at the supermarket and spent our $20 budget on some bread rolls and snacks then went down to Toowoon Bay, a beautiful beach that is fairly protected from the ocean swells and safe for little kids.
We had a swim. Fletch helped give our lunches a bit of crunch by throwing a handful of sand in the air as we ate. We played in the sand. I went for a run to get some exercise. Fletch ran away a couple of times. We had another swim. I made a wig out of seaweed. We laughed. It was a good time.
I have fond memories of days at the beach from my childhood, we didn’t go often but I loved it when we did. I would love for the kids to look back when they’re older and remember good times we all had together. It is also one of my hopes for them to grow to appreciate nature and simple pleasures away from screens.
The kids don’t need us to be spending money on them in order to have fun. They still have that natural ability to make their own fun wherever they are. They were both happy little souls just playing in the sand and water and having our attention. So simple.
